WWII and Bougainville – some amazing footage

Look what I found! I’m not a historical war buff but I found this really interesting. I had just retuned from Bougainville where the Australian Army were conducting a pretty significant exercise “Operation Render Safe” in Torokina, a remote district on the west coast of Bougainville Island. They are partnered with the ABG and other governments in the Pacific to remove and destroy the unexploded ordnance, guns and other military equipment left over from World War Two. I knew it was a problem but now I understand the scale – this footage is amazing! Click on the link below to watch:


Members of the 1st Battalion, 3d Marines, coming out of the jungle from the front lines. They were the first to hit the beach at Torokino Point where the strongest opposition was met. Captain Frank H. Vogel, is in command of Company “C,” 1st Battalion, 3d Marines.
