Just to clarify from the outset – Bougainville is a real place and it’s not located in rural New Zealand.
Bougainville is an amazing tropical island cluster just north of Australia, with a troubled history. Geographically part of the Solomon Islands but politically part of Papua New Guinea, Bougainville is now an Autonomous Region with its own government and economy – a step toward independence, something they have been fighting for for a long time.
Bougainville was the location of the book and movie Mr Pip, and has a fascinating, sad but hopeful history which we will talk about in more detail later. For now please watch this amazing documentary about their fight called the Coconut Revolution (the video starts at the 17 second mark):
FYI: Bougainville was named after the explorer Louis de Bougainville and is not the home of the Bougainvillea flower, although it does grow there and it’s beautiful, like Bougainville!
